a glimpse into the future
Due to the high need for long term development solutions in PNG and the success of the current operations, YWAM has recognised the need to upgrade its current vessel, which is well over the optimal lifespan of a ship. Preliminary plans for a new ship would increase effectiveness by 400%, offer quick speeds, access areas with more shallow waters, and have a better impact on the environment. A recent study found the cost of operating a 20 year old ship compared to a five year old ship is 40 percent higher.1
The new ship will offer disaster response capabilities in PNG and the Pacific, delivering medical facilities and assistance within a 1000km range in 48 hours.
The design of the new ship has a shallow draft, a mother ship concept with multiple launches, onboard communications, manoeuvrability, training, community development and resources.
Improvements to our existing facility
Currently, our future plan is to expand our existing facility, ensuring the continued delivery of our services and increasing our effectiveness in Townsville, the North Queensland region, and beyond. The extended facility would meet a critical community need by providing much-needed disaster relief resources, while otherwise being used as a community development centre, aimed at building capacity in the region’s young people.
